ACRES FOR ICE 2009

For the third year the Southey Skating Rink is farming a quarter of land three miles west of Southey on Highway 22.
This land is located just south of the Pioneer Grain Terminal. This year the committee seeded 45H26 Roundup Ready Canola which was donated by Hanmer Seeds from Govan.
It was seeded on May 21st by Daryl Frank and on May 28 Dale Sievert sprayed it with Clean Start. On June 20th Dale Sievert again sprayed it with Roundup.
On Saturday September 5th Dale Sievert, Danny Nixon, Gary and Trevor Leippi   swathed the canola. Harvest began noon Saturday September 19. Lyle Weber and Greg Jeworski from Raymore New Holland demonstrated a New Holland 8080 combine and by 9:30 the harvest was done. Laurie Ring, Les Davis and Delbert Schmidt supplied the use of their trucks so we could haul the canola directly to the Pioneer Terminal.

We would like to thank everyone who took time out of their busy farm schedule to volunteer their time and outfits to do these jobs. Mazenc Fuels (Petro Canada) and Southey Co-op again are donating all the diesel fuel for this year's farming operation. Monsanto Canada has given a $2000 credit in Monsanto products towards this project.
We would like to thank everyone for donating their equipment, time and products to make this project successful.
